Introduction (2021)
The Bill Osborne Taonga was introduced in 2021 to give Heartland Championship rugby its own challenge trophy, mirroring the tradition of the Ranfurly Shield in the NPC and the JJ Stewart Trophy in the Farah Palmer Cup.
The Challenge System
The Bill Osborne Taonga operates on a challenge basis throughout the Heartland Championship season. Like the Ranfurly Shield, the holding union must defend the taonga in home matches during the regular season. Successful challengers become the new holder and must defend in any home upcoming home matches they have left in the season.
Historical Holders (2021-2025)
Complete Holder History
Since its introduction in 2021, it has been held by eight of the competitions 11 teams. The Taonga has changed hands regularly, with eight of the competition's 11 teams holding it at some point and no single union establishing a long-term hold yet.

Why This Trophy Matters
When unions challenge for the Taonga, they're not just playing for a trophy, they're playing for their town's place in New Zealand rugby history.
Heartland rugby features:
- Players who work full-time jobs alongside rugby
- Smaller communities where everyone knows the team
- Volunteers who are the backbone of the competition
