It’s not just the rivalries on offer – though there are a few of those. There are community days, heritage jerseys, and the return of some truly great players to the provincial game.
Here are a few things to look out for in this week’s action:
- 47 debuts and more off the bench: This is what the Hilux NPC is all about – bringing through the next generation of talent. Southland (6), Wellington (6) and Counties Manukau (4) boast the highest number of potential debutants this week.
- The return of Richie Mo’unga: Canterbury’s fabled son returns to the provincial fold after his stint in Japan. The return will have to wait, however, as he’s been named to come off the bench when required.
- Stag Day: In the 250th meeting of Southland and Otago, it’s Stag Day in Invercargill – a celebration of all things Southland, as both sides look to get the better of their closest rivals in the early stages.
- Bryn Hall raises the bat: A supremely talented halfback gets his just reward at provincial level. Running out on Friday against Tasman at Trafalgar Park will be Bryn’s 100th match for North Harbour.
- Some true talents on show: Keep your eyes peeled for All Blacks greats like Ngani Laumape (Manawatū), Ofa Tu’ungafasi and Stephen Perofeta (Auckland), and the aforementioned Richie Mo’unga (Canterbury). Shannon Frizzel is also waiting in the wings for Tasman.
