Born and raised in South Auckland and currently signed to Counties Manukau for the Mitre 10 Cup make for solid claims to the North for Read. But the South also hold strong ties to the 34-year-old loose forward who studied at the University of Canterbury and played for Canterbury and the Crusaders for more than a decade.

Speaking on Sky Sport’s ‘The Breakdown’, Read revealed who he would be supporting in the clash scheduled to take place on September 5.

“I think I’ve got an allegiance to the South. The boys I’ve played a lot with are representing the South so that’s who I am probably going to lean towards,” Read said.

With the Mitre 10 Cup set to kick off the week after the North v South clash, Read said he was looking forward to playing after being on the other side and watching most of the action this year.
