The butcher boys suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of Heartland neighbours Horowhenua Kapiti. Whanganui held a slender 10-7 lead at the break, and although the sides traded tries early in the second spell, a converted try from midfielder Connor Paki secured the 19-17 win for the home side.
Poverty Bay hosted North Otago in a high-scoring fixture, with the visitors running in seven tries on their way to a 45-27 win. The bonus-point win leaves North Otago as one of four teams tied on 16 points on the table.
East Coast picked up their first win of the season in dominant fashion, beating West Coast 66-43. All Blacks Sevens representative Fletcher Carpenter ran in three tries and seven conversions for a personal haul of 31 points, the most by any player in a single game this season.
Mid Canterbury ran in seven tries for a 43-35 win over Buller in Ashburton, leaving them just inside the top four on points difference.
King Country sit atop the standings with 17 points, followed on 16 points by Whanganui, Thames Valley, Mid Canterbury and North Otago, with South Canterbury on 15 points.
